VR for Good Challenge

Objective

Introducing a challenge to inspire Hong Kong secondary school students to embrace next-generation technologies for real-world projects.

Co-organised by Facebook, Cobo Foundation & Agent of Change, VR for Good Challenge aims to empower Hong Kong secondary school students to tackle social and environmental issues in the city through VR (Virtual Reality), thus motivate them to learn and make changes through technology.

We will challenge Hong Kong secondary school students to expand their understanding of people and our city and unleash their creativity to tackle one of the following most pressing social and environmental issues in Hong Kong — all through the power of virtual reality.

Our mental health has deteriorated due to the impacts brought by COVID-19. How do we improve our mental health and well-being through VR?

How do we raise public awareness of environment and sustainability issues in Hong Kong and improve our quality of life while reducing pollution and waste through VR?

Application is open to students currently enrolled in S.1 to S.5 / Grades 7 to 11 (12-year System) /Years 7 to 12 (13-year System) in Hong Kong

In Phase I of VR for Good Challenge, students will focus on the first three stages of design-thinking:

  1. Empathize:
    Think about the target audience based on your chosen topic (Choose 1 out of 2: VR for Mental Health & Well-being –or- VR for Environment & Sustainability)
  2. Define:
    Construct a specific problem statement
  3. Ideate:
    Come up with creative solutions

Up to 20 teams will be selected to proceed to Phase II. Every team entering Phase II of the challenge will receive the following:

  1. One set of Oculus VR headset* & Insta360 camera
  2. CoSpaces VR coding workshops by Cobo Academy
  3. 360 camera workshops by Insta360
  4. Experiential and coaching workshops by Supporting Organisations

* Oculus Go or equivalent Oculus VR headset

Phase I of VR for Good Challenge has been successfully completed!

Thanks to the unwavering support of the school community and our co-organisers, Phase I has attracted 190 teams formed by over 700 students and teachers from 80 secondary schools in Hong Kong! We are excited to see the creativity of the students and their commitment to address the pressing social and environmental challenges through Virtual Reality.
